Description:
The PVC pipe represents the Trachea which is the windpipe.
The whistle represents the Larynx which are the vocal chords.
The 2 balloons represent the Lungs.
The lines on the 2 balloons represent the Bronchioles.
The 1 large balloon represents the Diaphragm.
The PVC connector represents the Bronchi.
The little dots at the end of the bronchioles represent the Alveoli. Gas exchange occurs in the Alveoli. There are about 350,000,000 alveiolies in a healthy lung.

Functions:
When the diaphragm contracts (pulls down) it allows the lungs to fill with air replacing the displaced air in the frame. Since the frame is air tight (except the whistle) air is forced to flow in and out only through the whistle. Air flowing in through the whistle does not create a noise. The force of air on the way out activates the whistle mimicking vocal chords. When you exhale (breathe out) the diaphragm relaxes.
